How to Deal with Empathy Fatigue - Curves Welcome

Curves Welcome with Suzie Carr

I’d describe myself as an empath. When someone is hurt, I’m hurt. When someone is sad, I’m sad. When someone is in a bad mood, I’m in a bad mood. I seem to absorb the energy of whatever is happening around me. This can be all consuming and detrimental to my well-being. I realized after a while that taking on the weight of the world’s problems would destroy me if I didn’t set some safety measures and boundaries into place.

Today I wanted to share some of those.

Why We Should Adopt a Growth Mindset

Seize the Day Podcast

Welcome to Seize the Day Podcast with Natalie Miller-Snell.

In todays show I talk about Growth Mindset

  • What is a Growth Mindset
  • Why is it a good to adopt a Growth Mindset

Growth Mindset is knowing that with continual learning and practise, you can get better at anything.  You can achieve ANYTHING.

Over 30 years ago, Stanford Psychologist, Carol Dweck, developed the terms fixed mindset and growth mindset - she used these terms to describe beliefs individuals have about learning and intelligence.

Quote from Sophie’s World by Jostein Garrder: -

“A sculptor is working on a large block of granite… one day a little boy comes by and says, ‘What are you looking for?’ ‘Wait and see,’ answers the sculptor. After a few days the little boy comes back, and now the sculptor has carved a beautiful horse out of the granite. The boy stares at it in amazement, then he turns to the sculptor and says, ‘How did you know it was in there?’”

The Importance of Self-Love & Self-Care

Seize the Day Podcast

Welcome to Seize the Day Podcast with Natalie Miller-Snell.

In todays show I explore the importance of Self-Love and Self-Care.

I talk through some great tips including: -

  • Good sleep
  • Food / diet
  • Taking breaks
  • Exercise
  • Activities which help you feel your best
  • Learning to say no
  • Putting yourself first

Seize the Day was inspired by my favourite latin expression, Carpe Diem. I’ve had some great mentors throughout my life who have offered me invaluable guidance. I'm hoping to do the same through these podcasts.  We have so many wonders at our fingertips; sometimes we just need a little help, or someone to point us in the right direction.

I hope you enjoy the show!

Quote from the Show by Kristin Neff, a pioneer of self-compassion: -

“Self-compassion involves treating yourself with the same kindness, concern, and support you’d show to a good friend. When faced with difficult life struggles, or confronting personal mistakes, failures, and inadequacies, self-compassion responds with kindness rather than harsh self-judgment, recognizing that imperfection is part of the shared human experience.”

(Neff & Dahm, 2015)

Embracing Anxiety and Mental Health with Singer, Songwriter Ash Harris - Curves Welcome

Curves Welcome with Suzie Carr

I have welcomed a talented artist on today's show. We're going to chat about some of life's curves and how they helped shape the course of their life.

I am so excited to introduce you to Ash Harris, also known as Acoustic Ash. Ash is a prolific indie singer songwriter who continues to excel within the songwriting field whether it be through political poetry or the ever-emotionally evoking and sincerity of Ash's interpretation of everyday events. These events include loss, love, money, and politics.

Ash uses an acoustic guitar in a smoky, soulful expression as a platform for diversity and equality. Rumor has it that if you stick around to the end of this episode you will be in for a musical treat.

And what a treat it is!

How to Deal with Creative Burnout - Curves Welcome

Curves Welcome with Suzie Carr

It is great to have goals and desires and a steady pulse on actions. But, it’s only great as long as you are not burning the wick on both ends. Because when you do that, that light, that energy will fizzle out.

Have you ever felt this way? Completely overwhelmed and unable to continue with projects, even those projects you absolutely love? You’re not alone. Even the most passionate of creative people can end up burning out from the pressure of always trying to keep up with an unrealistic pace.

Here's how to avoid it:

  • Unplug
  • Find harmony in the work you do
  • Add wiggle room
  • Change your environment
  • Meditate with deep breathing

How to be More Assertive - Curves Welcome

Curves Welcome with Suzie Carr

To be able to clearly communicate your ideas assertively in a way that stabilizes a situation is a skill that is hard to learn. The key here for those of you who are not naturally assertive is that it’s a skill that can be learned. If you don’t learn it, the costs can be great to both personal and professional relationships and problems will continue to build until you take a step to neutralize them.

In this episode, we explore these tips to becoming more assertive:

  • State the problem from your viewpoint
  • Validate and show empathy for the other person
  • State your needs and feelings
  • Be straightforward
  • Pay attention to body language

Ever have one of those days when you’re sitting there staring into space knowing you really ought to focus on something more important than that constant dialogue in your head telling you to hey, just sit here a little while longer and stare at nothing. Yeah, just keep putting that important task off until you feel up to it. The second you cave into that voice, your productivity is toast.

In this episode, we take a look at 5 ways to stay disciplined:

  • Owning up to weaknesses

A Problem Shared is a Problem Halved

Seize the Day Podcast

Welcome to Seize the Day Podcast with Natalie Miller-Snell.

In todays show, I wanted to explore the basic concept of talking.  How a problem shared really is a problem halved.

We can often drive ourselves crazy and worry unnecessarily when we don’t share.  We can build things out of context in our mind until we are immobilised through fear.  So in this episode I talk about some of my experiences and some examples, to demonstrate why it’s good to talk.
